Ashoka the Great was a powerful emperor who ruled most of present-day India from 268 to 232 B.C., after the Mauryan dynasty's decline. His reign is often recognized as a significant turning point in Indian history. Known as an extraordinary ruler, he introduced novel administrative methods and policies based on his unique understanding of responsibility and justice. More fascinating than his military exploits, however, was his spiritual transformation and unparalleled dedication to peace, social welfare, and non-violence.
